International Women's Day 2015 Statement
On the days leading up to International Women’s Day on March 8th, we at Grassroots Global Justice (GGJ) Alliance are excited to announce the formation of the US chapter of the World March of Women, a global feminist movement with national coordinating bodies in 65 countries around the world. This International Women’s Day, March 8th 2015, marks the beginning of the 4th International Action.
Our theme for the US-based actions: “We Will Keep Marching Until We Are All Free: Defending the Dignity of Our Bodies, Our Communities, and Mother Earth” expresses the urgency of this moment in the lives of women and gender non-conforming people around the world. It has never been more clear that degree with which capitalist, patriarchal, white supremacist policies, ideology and practices have destroyed people, communities and the Earth.
We are #DefendingDignity of Our Bodies: because we should be able to walk the streets without being harassed or be murdered based on our gender, because we should be identified the way we want to be identified and not based on what society says people should look/ act/sound like, because our all labor should be valued and compensated, because we are impacted by domestic violence, because we need to be able to exercise self-defense when our lives are threatened without being further criminalized by the state, because we have the right to control our own bodies without others having the power to influence how we should live, work, play, reproduce, think, and who we should love.
We are #DefendingDignity of Our Communities: because the war abroad is also a war at home, because we are forced off our lands just because someone else “owns” it, because unemployment and underemployment is rampant, because state violence is a form of social control, because our communities are torn apart to make way for luxury housing that we can’t afford to live in, because we should never be seen as being less for not having the right papers, accent, income, or race.
We are #DefendingDignity of Mother Earth: because generations of unchecked consumption, waste, extraction spurred by corporations and protected by governments have caused irreparable damage that future generations will deal with, because we can’t buy or build our way out of the climate crisis, because wars are fought over oil and water and land and man-made borders, because protecting the rights of Mother Earth will sustain life systems we need to survive, because we can build a Just Transition towards an economy that meets the needs of people AND the planet we live in.
Join Us in Action!
In conjunction with the WMW 4th International Call to Action, between March 7th and April 24th, GGJ members across the country will hold actions, trainings, and events to publicly launch the US chapter of the World March of Women. Already GGJ members in 10 cities are planning events and actions just for March 8th alone.
On April 24th, there will be a 24-hour feminist action from 12-1pm in every time zone around the world, to commemorate the second anniversary of the factory fire and collapse at Rana Plaza, in Bangladesh, the site of the deadliest disaster in the history of the garment industry worldwide.
We invite everyone to create your own actions or take part in actions that are already happening. If you are interested, we also have a training that is in English, Spanish, and Chinese that you can do with your members.
