WSF 2011 Opening March

Today was the opening day of the 2011 World Social Forum in Dakar, Senegal. As we approached the starting point of the march, I could feel the electricity in the air. The streets buzzed with action. Excitement mounted with each step towards the march. Cabs zipped back and forth, dropping off small groups of people.  Local merchants moved through the crowd with clothes, jewelry, and other products in hand, hoping to capture someone’s attention. Bus loads of activist and organizations poured into the growing mass of chanting participants.

Day 2: Senegal

Today was beautiful despite the slow start. This morning we had another GGJ delegation meeting. It was supposed to begin at 9AM, but everyone had a slow start. My roommate and I had set our alarms at 6:45AM, but it was a feat to wake up. I pushed my snooze button at least six times and finally peeled myself out of bed at 8:15AM. I got ready as quick as I could, because I did not want to be late for the 9AM meeting.
