Highlights of 1000 Durbans for Climate Justice

We’re building some strong momentum moving toward the 1000 Durbans for Climate Justice week of action! So far 24 organizations have endorsed the 1000 Durbans Call to Action, and 9 actions are posted on the grassrootsclimatesolutions.net site with more to come. Folks are busy organizing a range of activities bringing important information to their members, to challenging false solutions, to demanding real community solutions for climate justice:

* In Vermont and Virginia, Vermont Workers Center and Virginia New Majority are hosting mass member gatherings to link their local issues to the climate crisis.

* In Los Angeles, the Labor/Community Strategy Center, Communities for a Better Environment and allies are calling on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to stop the 710 Freeway expansion and instead strengthen the public transportation system.

* In Chicago, Family Farm Defenders and Little Village Environmental Justice Organization will challenge the false solution of carbon trading at the Chicago Board of Trade.

* In Oakland, a wide coalition of organizations including Communities for a Better Environment, Movement Generation and The Ruckus Society will be expanding urban agriculture in East Oakland, reclaiming land and getting their hands dirty, demanding more idle public land to be used for growing healthy food for all residents of Oakland.

If you don’t have an action planned, we need folks to gather petitions signatures. We’re asking everyone to gather at least 25 signatures by Sunday December 4th at 1pm EST.
