11/29: GGJ DELEGATION TO DURBAN COP17

The 17th Conference of Parties (COP17) in Durban opened on Monday to the same old tune: false promises, false optimism, false solutions. The primary issues on the table include how to finance adaptation to climate disruption, technological solutions to climate problems, and the further development of carbon-trading schemes to commodify soil, oceans, and forests.
The United States government is playing a big role in setting up these talks for failure. The State Department delegation in charge of these negotiations has repeatedly stated that there will be no binding agreements to reduce carbon emissions any time soon, and most likely not before 2020. They have thrown their weight behind financing, technology and trading schemes that deny the US' climate debt to the rest of the world. They are prioritizing expensive technological tricks and over natural reduction, renewability, and respect for the rights of frontline communities and the rights of Mother Earth. And despite the economic depression in carbon trading, they are still pursuing the false solution of carbon markets which would make the 1% richer at the expense of us all.
Meanwhile, experts say that the world has less than a decade to decrease current emissions before climate disruption becomes irreversible. But real talk about binding targets for emissions reductions have been swept under the table.
The Grassroots Global Justice Alliance and its delegation of 14 environmental justice leaders will be in Durban to help build social movement solutions to the climate crisis. We will be targeting the U.S. delegation to expose their agenda that prioritizes profit from pollution over a just transition off of fossil fuels and other polluting industries.
