It Takes Roots

It Takes Roots joins together three powerful alliances of grassroots activists and frontline communities’ leaders: Grassroots Global Justice Alliance, the Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN), and the Climate Justice Alliance.

The organizations in these three movement alliances developed analysis around the It Takes Roots framework as part of their leadership role in shaping the vision and formation of the 2014 People’s Climate March and the People’s Climate Justice Summit in New York City.  While the collaboration to organize the People’s Climate March between grassroots environmental & climate justice organizations and “Big Green” environmental groups was imperfect, some advancements were made, particularly in affirming the importance of the leadership of frontline communities.  The front of the People’s Climate March consisted of youth of color impacted by climate change, Indigenous Peoples, and other frontline communities, carrying the slogan: “Frontlines of Crisis: Forefront of Change.”

The It Takes Roots framework continues to resonate with frontline communities, from the It Takes Roots contingent in the People’s Climate March in 2014, to the It Takes Roots delegation to Paris for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2015, to the It Takes Roots to Change the System People’s Caravan in 2016.
