Update from AWAM Strategy Meeting

Member Organizations of the AWAM Working Group,

As you all know, a strategy session for our working group was held at POWER in SF this past weekend (April 2-4). this was a follow-up on the discussions we began during the Miami GGJ Membership Assembly.

AWAM members who attended include Bruce Reilly (DARE), Lian Hurst Mann and Barbara Lott-Holland (LCSC) and Steve Williams (POWER).  Alex Tom from CPA checked in for a few hours. Michael Leon Guerrero Jen Soriano were there representing GGJ's staff.  In addition, resource allies who attended were Christine Ahn, Calvin Maiw and Max Elbaum (from War Times) and Judith LeBlanc (from Peace Action).

It was an excellent meeting. We worked hard to represent what we believe to be the interests of our own orgs. and the rest of the member orgs. that want to participate in the AWAM working group but were unable to attend. We did come up with a proposal, which will be included in the more organized report I send early next week; in the meantime Jen has posted her meeting notes on the GGJ sight.

For your calendars, we set the next conference call for Wednesday April 14, 3:30 pst. when we will discuss the proposal.

Those of us who were able to attend are very excited about the renewal of the working group, but each member organization has very limited resources. I, Lian, have agreed to be point person for AWAM until we determine our co-leads. As you know nomination (April 1-11) and election (April 12-16) of co-leads are upon us. We will be able to discuss this collectively on our April 14 telephone call, but any organization that is willing to have a representative serve, please let michael@ggjalliance.org or cindy@ggjalliance.org know during the April 1-11 nomination period.

Please stay tuned for the strategy meeting report/proposal, coming soon.

Thanks, Lian Hurst Mann, Labor/Community Strategy Center
