“Militarism is a root cause of a number of our global and domestic issues. It prioritizes and glorifies the expansion and aggressive use of formal, organized state violence to further state interests. It threatens and harms the self-determination of people and nations abroad, while its simultaneously utilized as a tool of overwhelming control here at home.” – Ramon Mejia, About Face: Veterans Against War
GGJ’s No War, No Warming, Build an Economy for the People and the Planet slogan echoes the framework of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s philosophy of the Triple Evils of Poverty, Racism and Militarism. Our peace and justice work is about standing up against US imperial intervention globally as well as here at home.
With a central commitment to grassroots internationalism, GGJ has long understood the relationship between the war at home and the wars abroad.
The US has a long sordid history of leading and participating in international wars predicated on both white supremacy and the safeguarding of capitalism.. All of this continues to occur at the expense of countless civilian lives and creation of humanitarian disasters. At the same time, state violence continues against our communities here at home — police killing and mass incarceration disproportionately of Black and Latinx people, racial profiling of Arabs and muslims, ICE raids of immigrant and refugee communities, and more.
Through the No War, No Warming framework we hope to continue to contribute an analysis of the relationship between militarism and the extractive economy, and to deepen that consciousness and messaging within our membership. We are committed to critically struggling against growing US militarism in its various forms and stand in solidarity both with our targeted communities inside of empire as well as with our global family in the struggle for self- determination and autonomy.
“The US military, and militaries across the world, help enforce extractive economies. When people in local communities and frontline communities are trying to build movements to keep extractive corporations from taking the resources out of their lands, it is the military, the police and militarism, in general, that is stopping that from happening.”
