  • November 13, 2021 – It Takes Roots Statement on Conclusion of the UNFCCC COP26 Conference of the Parties and Glasgow Climate Pact: Incrementalism Leaves Frontline Communities to Face Increasing Climate Chaos

In November 2021, GGJ members traveled to Glasgow, Scotland with our sister alliances: the Climate Justice Alliance, the Indigenous Environmental Network, the Just Transition Alliance, and Jobs With Justice to mobilize together as the It Takes Roots frontline delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Conference of the Parties (COP26). COP26 comes in a historical moment when the climate crisis continues to touch all of our lives. Conditions of the COVID pandemic and the global vaccine apartheid meant that the already unjust exclusion of the movements from the Global South—those most impacted by the climate crisis—were even more absent and excluded from the negotiations.

Why are polluters so eager to pledge net zero?

COP26 is being dubbed the Net Zero COP. You will hear net zero pledges everywhere—from transnational corporations, polluting governments, and even some big conservation NGOs, all parading carbon offset schemes and pledging to reach net zero targets. Net zero is an illusion—a smoke screen—a last ditch effort to sell a fantasy, buy time, and profiteer off the very disaster they are creating. The “net” in net zero refers to the math equation that polluters use to pretend that they can offset and balance the harm of the pollution they are emitting into the atmosphere. These powerful players use “net zero” to disguise climate inaction and continue to pollute fenceline Black, Brown and Indigenous communities, while colonizing the forests of the Global South. In this way, Net Zero is also green colonialism. As the U.S. re-enters the Paris Agreement, our frontline movements demand that the Biden Administration make actual emissions reductions at the source of pollution. No Net Zero—Keep It In the Ground!

No War, No Warming—build a Feminist Economy

“Here’s the awful truth: Even if every person, every automobile, and every factory suddenly emitted zero emissions, the earth would still be headed—head first and at full speed—toward total disaster for one major reason: the U.S. military.”

—Professor Barry Sanders, author of The Green Zone: The Environmental Costs of Militarism

Communities across the U.S. and the world have been devastated by military occupation, war, and state-sanctioned violence. The U.S. military is not only the single largest consumer of fossil fuels in the world, it  has served as the enforcer of occupation of Indigenous and sovereign lands while upholding violent resource extraction across the world. Addressing climate change requires ending the military industrial complex. A Just Transition to a Regenerative Economy must end wars, military culture, and the violence of militarized forces and police in our communities and across the world. Our delegation to COP26 includes a whole set of leaders from GGJ’s demilitaRISE work group, bringing the vision and demands from the 15th Plank of the People’s Orientation to a Regenerative Economy: Divest from wars, criminalization, and militarism at home & abroad—and invest in a regenerative future. We will link up with many more global social movement allies pushing the question of holding the U.S. military accountable as the world’s largest contributor to global warming

Ending Militarist Climate Change International Town Hall

On Wednesday, November 10, at 1:00 p.m. PT/ 4:00 p.m. ET, we will partner with the Feminist Peace Initiative to host a special round table report back between our delegation in Glasgow and members back home, and in dialog with a few elected officials to directly raise the demands coming out of COP26. Register for the report back!

Español: NO GUERRA, NO CALENTAMIENTO

—Profesor Barry Sanders, autor de The Green Zone: The Environmental Costs of Militarism (La zona verde: Los costos ambientales del militarismo)
