Co-Deputy Director, Organizational Strategy

Flexible Location, USA based. During COVID-19 travel restrictions, most of our programming and organizing work is happening remotely with some optional travel beginning in fall 2021. As travel restrictions are lifted, travel will be required for this position on average 5-10 days per month in the U.S., and 15 days per year internationally.

Compensation: $85,000-$90,000, commensurate with experience. This position is full-time with potential for long term based on evaluation after a three-month introductory period. Benefits including medical, dental, vision and life insurance begin on the first month after date of hire; 50% child medical insurance benefit available. 401K after one year of employment. Generous PTO and vacation. Additional remote work benefits offered.

Grassroots Global Justice Alliance (GGJ) is an alliance of over 65 member organizations. GGJ is organizing to build an agenda for power for Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, Pacific Islander and working class white communities. We understand that there are important connections between the local issues we work on and the global context, and we see ourselves as part of an international movement for global justice. GGJ focuses on bringing grassroots organizations (GRO) into a long-term process of relationship building, political alignment and the development of transformational leadership, particularly for working class women and gender-oppressed Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian and Pacific Islander people. We weave and bridge together US-based GRO groups and global social movements working for climate justice, gender justice, an end to war, and a just transition to a new economy that is better for people and the planet.

Position Summary: The Co-Deputy Director, Organizational Strategy is responsible for overseeing external political and organizing strategies, including programs and communications; supporting overall staff cohesion; and supervising Director level staff. This position reports to the Executive Director and collaborates closely with the Co-Deputy Director of Infrastructure. This position is a cost-shared position with GGJ Action Fund (GGJAF), GGJ’s sibling 501(c)(4) organization.

Job Responsibilities

Lead Political Strategy (35%)

  • Develop, Lead and Oversee National and International Political Strategy for GGJ and GGJAF, in communication with Directors Team, Coordinating Committee (elected member leadership), staff and membership.
    • Ensure campaign work is moving in relationship to political strategy.
    • Write Strategic Documents in preparation for meetings with staff and member leaders.
    • Prep key leadership in understanding and deciding on strategic proposals and documents.
  • Ensure clear communication and cohesion across teams.
  • Ensure programming is on track to meet organizational goals.
  • Track political developments and current events to inform strategic direction, and orient staff to understand political context for our work.
  • Define organizational political stances based on consultation with staff and member leaders, including identifying key political issues to consult with member leadership and allies about.
  • Meet regularly with Executive Director to understand national & international political landscape.
  • Supervise Director level staff.

Communications (15%)

  • Identify political stances, organizational line and narrative strategy for all national and international programs for GGJ and GGJAF. 
  • Work with comms team to finalize content that reflects organizational line and to support leading communications strategy.

Staff Development & Cohesion (25%)

  • Work with Executive Director and Co-Deputy Director of Infrastructure to ensure staff understands organizational strategic direction, how programs advance our strategy, and what staff roles are in the implementation.
  • Work with Organizing Director to ensure Political and Organizing training of core teams.
  • Ensure that regular supervision, training and development opportunities are implemented by supervisors.
  • Meet regularly with Co-Deputy Director of Infrastructure to ensure organization is on track to meet indicators of organizational wellbeing.
  • Collaborate with Co-Deputy Director of Infrastructure to develop agendas and facilitate Directors Team meetings and quarterly all-staff meetings in order to meet organizational goals.

Represent GGJ/GGJAF in Key National and International Partnerships (10%)

  • Bring GGJ/GGJAF perspective to movement spaces, and report back on a regular basis.

Support to maintain shared internal digital systems (5%): files, receipts, finance forms, shared calendar, materials inventory, digital security protocols.

  • Participate in and support preparation for quarterly in-person staff meetings, annual Coordinating Committee meetings, and other events as necessary.
  • Compliance with GGJ remote working policies and procedures (calendaring, availability online, response time to communications, receipts, etc.)

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 15 years of organizing experience, including at least 10 years leadership level experience in U.S.-based Black, Indigenous and people of color led grassroots base-building social justice organizations.
  • At least 5 years supervision experience in a progressive organization.
  • Excellent understanding and analysis of political moment on the national and international progressive political landscape, in relationship to community-based and advocacy groups.
  • Significant experience in building grassroots and political power through base-building, civic engagement, and movement building.
  • Familiarity with some Left frameworks such as feminist economy, climate justice, transformative justice, and global justice issues, as well as concepts pertaining to self-determination, liberation, decolonization, internationalism, political economy, and popular social movements.
  • Ability to keep organizational strategy front and center, while also understanding what is needed on a day-to-day basis to keep the work moving.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English, including an ability to communicate with diverse groups of people with sensitivity and appreciation to cultural differences. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills with the ability to engage with diverse audiences, and tune into others’ feelings, thoughts, and motivations and earn trust by consistently demonstrating integrity, authenticity, and professional competence.
  • Ability to work remotely, manage multiple work tasks, maintain attention to detail and accuracy, prioritization skills, and ability to identify and communicate items needing further attention.

Preferred Experience

  • Existing relationships within the racial, gender, climate justice and larger U.S.-based and international social movement communities.
  • Familiarity with, and experience coordinating between, sibling 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations.

Position Summary:  This position will support and extend the capacity of each of GGJ’s two Co-Deputy Directors by helping track priorities and manage each of their individual communications, email, schedule, travel, expenses. This is a Full-Time, exempt position. This position is a cost-shared position with GGJ Action Fund (GGJAF), GGJ’s sibling 501(c)(4) organization.

Job Responsibilities

Executive Assistant to two Co-Deputy Directors (85%)

  • Manage Email (sorting, flagging, prioritizing, responding)
    • Respond to emails as directed by each Co-DD. Communicate clearly and accurately on behalf of each Co-DD, GGJ and GGJAF.
  • Manage Scheduling
    • Calendar management
    • Coordinate daily schedules for each Co-DD (calls, meetings, prep times, reminders, etc.)
    • Work with each Co-DD to coordinate meetings and call logistics for meetings as needed, including staff, GGJ Board and GGJAF Board meetings.
      • Support each Co-DD with tracking priorities, backward planning, and meeting deadlines
        • Meet with each Co-DD 1-2 times a week to review work and priorities and determine next steps
        • Track requests, invites, deadlines for each Co-DD
        • Maintain efficient notes documents in order to organize the various pieces of work each Co-DD is responsible for, and that both assistant and each Co-DD reference on a daily basis
        • Maintain regular daily communication via text or Slack during work hours
        • Prepare strategic and clear memos for each Co-DD when not able to meet during the week, especially when they are traveling or in all day meetings.
        • Support Administrative Management of Each Co-DD
          • Maintain passwords, account numbers and confidential information
          • Track expenses, file receipts and process reimbursement needs for each Co-DD
          • Troubleshoot with banks, credit card, etc
          • File documents and clean up filing systems
          • Sign off on documents on behalf of each Co-DD, with approval
            • Ensure Travel Logistics for Each Co-DD
            • Ensure travel, lodging, documentation and local transportation logistics for each Co-DD as needed, in coordination with Logistics staff.
            • Support communication between each Co-DD, GGJ/GGJAF staff and ITR staff
            • Anticipate logistical and administrative needs for each Co-DD

            Required Qualifications and Experience

            • At least 3 years high level administrative experience, ideally in remote workplace environment.
            • Familiarity with and commitment to GGJ’s political principles and membership in U.S.-based Black, Indigenous and people of color led grassroots base-building social justice organizations, and concepts of Grassroots Internationalism.
            • Strong communication skills in English, including the ability to listen actively and speak clearly; to read and comprehend a variety of communications and resources; to write clearly; and to summarize and communicate information efficiently and accurately.
            • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills with the ability to engage with diverse audiences, and tune into others’ feelings, thoughts, and motivations and earn trust by consistently demonstrating integrity, authenticity, and professional competence.
            • Ability to work remotely, manage multiple work tasks, maintain attention to detail and accuracy, prioritization skills, and ability to identify and communicate items needing further attention.
            • Ability to apply sound judgment and manage sensitive or confidential information.

            Job Responsibilities

            Lead narrative strategy and communications plans (40%)

            • Craft organizational communications strategy for GGJ and GGJ Action Fund
            • Create and regularly update communications strategy according to organizational priorities, with defined outcomes and activities
              • Work closely with Organizing Director and Organizing Team to craft communications strategy in line with political and organizing strategy
              • Edit communications written by staff or contractors to ensure consistent narrative across e-blasts, fundraising materials, social media messaging, etc.
              • Create and lead media communications plans for GGJ programs including member engagement, media presence, and orientation of spokespeople.
              • Craft narrative strategy for sister organization GGJ Action Fund.
              • Supervise Comms Staff and Coordinate Communications Team
                • Supervise and Mentor Communications staff in comms strategy and implementation
                • Lead weekly Communications Team meeting: create agendas & facilitate
                • Supervise contractors: writers, graphic designers, video producers, printers as needed
                  • Oversee consistent documentation of activities for internal and external communication.
                    • Ensure summaries & reports of key programs for website, communications to members, supporters, funders and allies.
                    • Train and coach GGJ staff and members on messaging.

                    Lead external communications and coordinate consistent public profile (40%)

                    • Conceptualize and lead earned media strategies for GGJ and GGJ Action Fund
                      • Work with Co-Deputy Director, Organizational Strategy to craft public-facing narrative.
                      • Draft and circulate press releases and media advisories during high program periods.
                      • Work with Executive Director, staff, contractors and members to create media & press content (op-eds, press releases with quotes, talking points).
                      • Orient spokespeople for talking to press during programs.
                      • Pitch media outlets on doing interviews with members and staff on key topics
                        • Develop and maintain media relationships
                          • Maintain and grow database of media contacts.
                          • Develop a strategic plan for relationships with journalists, media outlets. (Identifying sector of media, key focus areas, etc.)
                            • Ensure consistent social media presence (coordinated with comms team members).
                            • Develop a plan and protocols for echoing member communications.

                            • Strong track record of managing a comprehensive strategic communications plan, including media relations, digital advocacy, and narrative strategy.
                            • Knowledge of national landscape of climate/environmental justice, familiarity and political alignment with some of the GGJ frameworks of Global Well-being, Just Transition, Grassroots Feminism, Grassroots Internationalism.
                            • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills with the ability to engage with diverse audiences, and tune into others’ feelings, thoughts, and motivations and earn trust by consistently demonstrating integrity, authenticity, and professional competence.
                            • Ability to work remotely, manage multiple work tasks, maintain attention to detail and accuracy, prioritization skills, and ability to identify and communicate items needing further attention.
                            • Ability to write and speak English language.
                            • Experience in multiracial, multigenerational, multicultural settings.
                            • Knowledge of common computer applications: MS Office, Google docs, Dropbox, Adobe Suite, and Zoom video tele-conferencing systems. 
                            • Familiarity with CRM systems and Database management (Powerbase).
                            • Experience using social media & web development tools: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WordPress.
